This beauty of a shopping basket has been ethically hand woven in the rural Eastern Region of Kenya from local sisal fibres. Its stiff leaves are harvested, rolled and dyed by hand with soot and charcoal before six days of weaving begins. Each basket takes forty balls of sisal to complete, whilst two expert leather workers produce the soft leather trim and handles making it a very comfortable market companion, or storage basket. Basket weaving brings these artisans the opportunity to earn a valuable second income that’s flexible and fair.
